Hi everyone! I’m excited to teach you how to draw a face and hone in on where to start and how to finish! We’ll be looking at the structure of the face and where to place features. It’s also important to find your shadows to make that 2D surface pop into 3D. Get your pointer finger ready for a lot of blending of graphite. I will give you different references to draw from once you learn how to draw each part of a face week by week. In the end, you will be able to show a self-portrait drawn entirely by you! I’m looking forward to drawing through the journey together!

This class is for those who have taken portrait or drawing classes before whether here or elsewhere. We will be learning more about how to map and fill out a face as well as know how and where to shade by yourself with confidence. I’ll also be introducing the importance of negative space as well which involves looking at the drawing and references upside down. You will have exercises to complete each week so expect a bit of homework. By the end of the semester, you will come away with a self-portrait of yourself as well as the other various faces and exercises you completed. Color Theory will take you to a new level of understanding how to mix colors. Each of you will get a standard color wheel but as the weeks progress, you should be able to understand how colors work without it. We will be using different supplies to blend colors together to make our own color wheels as well. We’ll also be doing new projects each week using our new knowledge of color relationships. You will get a soft pastel set and sketchpad to go with your color wheel. Our projects will not be hard to draw as this is all about color! I will provide other mediums to work with as well such as watercolor and oil paint to play around with.

Whip out your micron pens for a black and white sketch that will look like you’ve been drawing for ages. Unlike graphite pencils which can look smudgy and gray, pens deliver clean lines. We’ll learn different techniques of drawing with a pen including cross hatching, pointillism, and more! Inktober happens in October where each day you have word prompts to draw from using your pens. We’ll be participating in that and seeing what each person comes up with daily. The other months will be filled with exercises, fun patterns to draw, and a big project toward the end of the semester.

Ceramics: Hand Building with Colored Clay

Students will learn a variety of techniques using a mid-range clay body tinted with Mason Stains, such as: Nerikomi (a Japanese technique of creating patterns with colored clay) Agateware (a blending and swirling technique) Skinner Blends (rolling out colored clay in a fluid gradient). The techniques will be applied to an assortment of vessels and sculptures. Some previous experience with pottery is useful but not required. Bring sketch book and pencil.

Students will use hand building techniques (pinching, coil building, slab work and kunikuri) to create functional wares. Functional wares are items such as: mug, plate, platter, charcuterie board, bowl, spoon etc. Focus will be invited to give attention to the thickness of the piece, the finish of the piece: does it feel too heavy, too rough, are the joins well attended and clean? Creativity is invited to the class as well, functional pottery can be fun! No previous pottery experience needed. Bring sketch book and pencil.

Description:
In this class we will use guided drawing as a means to discovering our own unique art style! Lessons will emphasize important foundational elements of a successful painting as we refer to famous works and styles created by the Masters, as well as a few contemporary artists. Students will learn how to see the world as an artist by breaking down complex subjects into simple shapes. Emphasis will be placed on “loosening up;” placing less energy on perfected realism, and celebrating the “imperfect” mark making that contributes to an interesting painting and design. We will cover drawing and painting technique, with wide exposure to multiple mediums. Just as each of our signatures reflect our own unique style, so does our artwork! We will correlate this concept to a marveling at God’s gift in creating each of us as an original masterpiece, each with our own unique gifts and strengths that we were given to bring beauty into this world! We will complete eight bold, beautiful art projects throughout the semester, each project taking several sessions to complete.
Please note class duration will be 90 minutes. Due to the nature of our multiple session projects, it is important your student attends as many classes as possible. Please send students in clothes that can get messy so they can feel free to create!
