American Civil War, Faith & Modern Culture Ages 13yr-18yr Matthew Vanderford Fall 2022 Social Studies

Description:A look at the American Civil War through the lens of a biblical worldview. We will briefly explore other civil wars, slavery, and the faith of popular and political figures of the era, as well as a chronological look at the lead up, the war, and the long term effects that lead directly into modern cultural war issues. Teacher will provide course text book. During this course we will be exploring a Civil War novel which is also provided by the teacher. Students will have access to extra resources on the subject, if needed.
Requirements:High School level course. Weekly prep reading, discussion, quizzes and short papers will all be expected from the students.

Description:Have fun and gain cultural perspective while making basic recipes from the countries explored in the Little Globetrotters class! Students will leave with a multicultural recipe book, an apron of their own, lots of tasty treats, and an assortment of new cooking and kitchen skills. *Recipes are allergy-friendly. Let the teacher know ASAP if your child has food allergies.
Requirements:Students must be enrolled in Little Globetrotters in order to take this class. Little Globetrotters students will be automatically enrolled in this course - contact the class coordinator if you do not wish to be enrolled.

HS Ancient History Through a Biblical Lens (Fall) Ages 14yr-18yr Rachael Becker Fall 2022 Social Studies

Description:This class is designed teach classic ancient history through a biblical worldview. It is a one year class that will meet weekly. Students will learn the archaeological and historical evidence for the Scriptures. The bulk of the class will be spent learning how Israel and the Early Church interacted with and were impacted by major people groups in history. We will explore Mesopotamia, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. I am a Washington State certificated teacher, who taught ancient history in a public middle school for eight years. (2013-2021). I also was a Biblical Studies major at Multnomah University. My teaching experience and education combined has equipped me to see history with a Christian worldview. I find it exciting to see what God has done in the past and knowing that helps us to trust his faithfulness today. My hope is to foster a deeper love of God and love of learning in students and help them see history on God's timeline.
Requirements:This class is for high school Students grades 9-12. Students will need a notebook, pencil, highlighters, sticky notes, and their Bible. Google Classroom will be used for some assignments. Others will be submitted in person depending on the activity. There will be some homework so students can receive credit for their high school transcript.

Description:A broad overview of historic events set on a visual timeline, with a focus on contextualizing the passage of time. Each class will be a mini-dive into one major world event, intended to be a very first introduction to world history from a high level. Class will include a lot of read-aloud with accompanying pictures (like Eyewitness books), and simple worksheets to fill out together to promote critical thinking about each world event. Optional supplemental reading of fun historical fiction early-reader chapter books at home that follow each of our world events (like Magic Tree House and The Imagination Station series).

Description:Travel the world with stories, songs, notebooking, and more! Each week will focus on a different country - learning the different flags, ways to say hello, geographical features, and cultural traits that make each country unique. The first semester will cover North America, South America and Asia while the second semester will cover Europe, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica.
Requirements:*This class is meant to be taken alongside the enrichment class Eat Your Way Around the World. At registration you will automatically be registered for both; contact the class coordinator if you do not wish to be enrolled in Eat Your Way Around the World.

The Founding Documents & Constitutional Government (Fall) Ages 15yr-18yr Andrew Ringnalda Fall 2022 Social Studies

Description:This class will cover the founding documents that form the basis for the US government and its structure (Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence, US Constitution) and the writings of the men who wrote these documents (Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers). Students will need to create a free account with Hillsdale College Online. We will be using several of their online courses as the basis for this year-long civics course: Intro to the Constitution, Constitution 101, Constitution 201, Federalist Papers, Presidency and the Constitution, US Supreme Court, Congress: How it Works and Why It Doesn’t, Public Policy from a Constitutional Viewpoint, Civil Rights in American History, American Citizenship and Its Decline Students should expect to spend about 1 hour each school day studying for this course. Instructor will administer and correct tests and keep grade records.
