A fun way to explore various textures and strengthen your hands while fine tuning dexterity to help improve your fine motor skills for writing and eye hand coordination. We will be making play dough, slime, putty, and other things with shaving cream and paints. We will also use dry textures such as beads, beans, rice, and sand.

In this hands-on class, we will be completing a messy science experiment each week to see how different substances react to each other. Each student will be provided a science journal that will cover the scientific method. We will ask questions, formulate hypotheses, record data and form conclusions.

Using Microscope Adventure! by Kym Wright, students will learn the basics of microscope use through hands on activities. Each week, students will explore God’s wonderful creation as we examine fibers, insects, flowers, blood cells, and more under the lens. This unit study introduces concepts in cell biology, observing cell structures, and microbiology, identifying and studying microorganisms such as bacteria. By the end of the semester, students will have a completed folder of lab sheets to take home. We will also briefly discuss key scientists who invented and advanced the microscope.
Parents may choose to do additional readings at home, but this is optional. A list of suggested books to accompany our Microscope Adventure! will be sent home on the first day of class and shared via Slack.
Requirements:
Students must be able to follow the instruction of the teacher. We will be using microscopes in class which will require the ability to have self-control when sharing with other students as well as being careful with the equipment. Students will also be drawing what they observe on simple lab sheets.
This is a traditional studio art class for students aged 11-15 who would love more time for projects. It is a year-long class. Some exposure to the Elements of Art would be helpful, but not required. Projects will include a variety of media, such as drawing with graphite, inks, soft pastels, and oil pastels, as well as acrylic painting on various surfaces (including paper, wood, and canvas), and mixed-media projects that incorporate watercolor and ink, collage, and handmade books. This will be a good fit for students who want to develop artistic skills, learn new techniques, and understand art vocabulary. Students will be issued a drawing journal and will be expected to practice their drawing skills at home regularly.
