Our format will most likely be similar to our last spring show, with our youngest students performing in two of the four shows. Details will be related in full at our mandatory parent meeting to be held at 7pm on Monday, February 27th. Parental attendance to this meeting is essential in order to ensure clarity of information and the success of your dancer. Each family is required to have one parent volunteer to help in some way with the show. Please read the updated class syllabus that is posted on the dance department page of this website for more general dance class information.

Spring 2022

- Ceramics
Schedule:
Wednesday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 11:00 am - 12:50 am
Description:
"Creating with their own two hands using water and clay, students will learn the basics of wheel work: learning to center, open and raise walls, shaping and forming into functional vessels. A week later, when their pot has dried some, they will be taught how to trim and decorate. After the first firing of their pots they will learn the art of glazing.
Students will also be learning terminology of the ceramics studio from Kiln to Kaolin, tapping into some of the chemistry names for clay and glaze ingredients and learning about the firing process and how their pottery goes in and out of the fire, and to what temperatures.
Throughout the weeks there will be demos and guided instruction of how to make various forms such as cylinders, bowls, altered pots, pitchers, mugs and more. They will be primarily throwing on the electric wheel but will also have the opportunity to practice making coil-pots on the banding wheel.
As they work within the structured boundaries of the orderly ceramics studio, this class is also excellent for socialization, teamwork and cheering each other on. I teach my students to help build up a strong environment in their classroom by building each other up. The ceramic studio becomes a source of art therapy, camaraderie and joy for them. Pottery students are bound to have a lot of fun together in this messy adventure of learning the old craftsmanship of wheel throwing.
This class is for beginning, intermediate or advanced ceramics students. Returning students will learn new skills and build off of other semesters.
Some notes:
-We fire all student work here at the center and students will be able to take home their finished pieces.
-The finished pottery they will be creating will have undergone several stages of wet, “leather -hard”, trimming and decorating, first fire, decoration, second fire. So it’s a really big deal when they receive their first finished pots from the kiln room. Look for that day when they get to bring them home!
-Students will have setup and cleanup chores, sometimes taking water buckets outside to roll buckets in and out of the back doors.
