Students will have two writing projects that will be broken down into manageable pieces throughout the course. The first piece will be a personal narrative (completed about mid-term) and the second piece will be a demonstration speech (the final project). The final class day will be an oral presentation of the written speech.
Students will learn how to include details, dialogue, and figurative language. In addition, they will learn strategies for writing effective introductions and satisfying conclusions, use proper conventions, and will learn to organize their papers well using paragraphing and transitional words/phrases in their writing.
Scoring: This course will use rubrics in order to score student writing and oral speech. There will be no letter grade, but rather a 1-4 score based on the rubric in addition to teacher comments. Students will also receive feedback from their peers.
Materials: Pencils, a highlighter of any color, notebook (spiral or composition is fine. College ruled preferred), lined 3x5 index cards, sticky notes, and folder or binder for carrying loose papers
Prerequisites: Students should have prior experience writing multi-paragraph essays/stories.
Homework: Students will need to complete much of the written work at home since class time will be used for lessons and practice. It will be broken down in to small chunks to be completed before the next class.
