This class is for those who have taken portrait or drawing classes before whether here or elsewhere. We will be learning more about how to map and fill out a face as well as know how and where to shade by yourself with confidence. I’ll also be introducing the importance of negative space as well which involves looking at the drawing and references upside down. You will have exercises to complete each week so expect a bit of homework. By the end of the semester, you will come away with a self-portrait of yourself as well as the other various faces and exercises you completed. Materials fee reduced to $5 if you have taken one of my portrait classes before.

- Ceramics
Schedule:
Wednesday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 10:00 am - 11:20 am
Description:
For intermediate/advanced wheel throwing students who want to take their throwing skills to the next level. There will be a lesson at the beginning of every class demonstrating the basic forms. Students will be challenged to make several pots in a row, repeating the same form. Throughout the weeks we will delve into:
-art history, studying the pots, the making of them, the people and the roots.
- the chemical makeup of clay and glazes, memorizing extensive pottery vocabulary from design techniques to scientific names.
-form & function,
-master potters' work,
-ceramic art throughout the ages
-study of various firing methods
-TECHNIQUE: throwing techniques to help you improve, detailed wheel trimming and leather-hard carving/design work
Serious/passionate pottery students will be able to use this as a launching pad for pottery apprenticeships, internships. This doubles as an art explore class.
(Returning FPHRC wheel throwing students: we will not be spending as much time cleaning, as this is the first class of the day. we will do basic cleanup such as tool washing and emptying of excess water from splash pans. If you have taken my wheel throwing class the past two semesters, you are ready for this class.)
Students must know how to center the clay and raise the walls and have had previous experience at the wheel. If FPHRC student, ideally 2 semesters of wheel throwing under your belt. Please bring a designated Pottery Notebook with blank pages (blank Moleskins or hardbound spiral ring sketchbooks are ideal).
This class is for beginning and returning pottery wheel students. Students will be guided in wheel throwing techniques with the goal of making functional pieces for use in their homes and spaces. They will be encouraged to bring their own ideas to the classroom and will be given exciting demos. While this is primarily a hands-on class, students will also be keeping a pottery notebook in which they will be encouraged to write notes, journal and sketch throughout the week. Students will also receive instruction in basic terminology of the ceramics studio pertaining to clay body, stages of clay becoming ceramics and the many curious and helpful tools potters use to create their own signature style. Teaching through lecture, note taking, demonstration, and 1:1 instruction will all be explored in our studio.
Requirements:
All supplies, consumable and shared are provided with the supply fee for this class. This class is a good fit for students who work well in a multi-sensory environment as the studio is alive with sights, smells and sounds, sometimes simultaneously; all while having their hands in lots of clay and water.

Pottery students will learn the basic techniques of wheelwork: throwing on the electric wheel and the more ancient practice of creating coil pots on the banding wheel. There will be demos, instruction of how to make basic vessels and plenty of creative freedom for thoughtful or independent learners. This class is for beginning, intermediate or advanced ceramics students. In addition to their weekly class time, pottery students will have the opportunity to come for open studio time 1.

Spring 2022

- Ceramics
Schedule:
Tuesday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 11:00 am - 12:50 pm
Description:
A fun pottery workshop for students 10-18. Try out the pottery wheel. Carve, cut and bond the clay. Draw and sketch ideas. Learn fresh designs. Press shells, plants and leaves into tiles. Spend an hour decorating and carving your pots. Learn the art of glazing. Students are bound to have a lot of fun together in this messy adventure of learning the old craftsmanship of wheel throwing and more. Creating with their own two hands using water and clay, students will learn the basics of handbuilding, bringing their ideas to the table and to the wheel.
Students will learn terminology of the ceramics studio from Kiln to Kaolin...they will also tap into some of the chemistry names for clay and glaze ingredients and learn a bit about the firing process and how their pottery goes in and out of the fire, and to what temperatures.
Tapping into their creativity as they work within the structured boundaries of the orderly ceramics studio, this class is also excellent for socialization, teamwork and cheering each other on. I teach my students to help build up a strong environment in their classroom by building each other up. The ceramic studio becomes a source of art therapy, camaraderie and joy for them.
Some notes:
-We fire all student work here at the center and students will be able to take home their finished pieces.
-The finished pottery they will be creating will have undergone several stages of wet, “leather -hard”, trimming and decorating, first fire, decoration, second fire. So it’s a really big deal when they receive their first finished pots from the kiln room. Look for that day when they get to bring them home!
-Students will have setup and cleanup chores, sometimes taking water buckets outside to roll buckets in and out of the back doors.
-Our pro ceramics studio provides several wheels, a slab roller, a pug mill, an array of mid-range glazes, a kiln and all the tools and supplies one would need.
***ATTENTION WHEEL THROWING STUDENTS****
We have just expanded the age range of this class to accommodate more wheel throwing enthusiasts of all skill levels: Beginning, intermediate and advanced. This will remain a part hand building part wheel throwing class and Miss Sia will meet your student at their level and help them to improve and have fun.

Pasimio, Rhys
Fall 2023
Social Studies
Schedule:
Thursday - Classroom - 224: 3:00 pm - 4:20 pm
Description:
Practical Psychology introduces the student to basic psychological and counseling tools and concepts that are most likely to impact the student in their real, day-to-day life. Concepts covered include a brief overview of the field of psychology, and the benefits of considering the inner workings of soul, mind, emotion, and memory.
Students will be introduced to common self-reflection tools such as the Genogram, the Ecogram, the Enneagram, mindfulness and interoception, and will be given opportunity to reflect on select aspects of their personal story. A goal of these discussions is to introduce students to daily practices of pausing, reflecting, and cultivating a balance between self-awareness and self-obsession.
Further discussions will explore current major issues in the mental health field. Students will be introduced to Family Systems and Internal Family Systems, genetics and epigenetics, mirror neurons and attachment science. Other discussions will explore major diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, ADHD, Bipolar, and Schizophrenia. These discussions will discuss the diagnoses from a third party perspective, exploring what a given diagnosis does and does not mean. Students will be offered exposure to brief and initial screening measures, but will be cautioned against self-diagnosis.
Students will also be offered information about the counseling industry, and information on how to access and navigate resources. For example, students will be taught the difference between pastoral and professional counsel, and within the professional world, the difference between a counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, and social worker, and the difference between counseling and “Rehab.”
Requirements:
Students should be at least 13 years old.
Given the nature of these discussions, a certain level of maturity and prior education is assumed. Topics such as sex and pornography, drugs and alcohol, suicide and self-harm, trauma, and abuse may be periodically mentioned at relevant intervals throughout the class. Mention of these topics will be meant to equip students with language to contemplate real-world application of psychological concepts.
