Music composition lessons are just like lessons on an instrument, but instead we learn how to write music! I am starting this small studio in hopes to provide an opportunity for students who have taken my Music Composition class at Firmly Planted to continue their study in composition. If you are new to music composition entirely however, you are welcome to join my studio and we will start from the beginning! (Particularly if your child is between the ages of 8 and 12. If older, check out my Music Composition class description page.)
Like private lessons on an instrument, students will be required to write music each week just like one would practice an instrument outside of lessons. Also, important to learning composition is to have a strong music theory foundation which is essentially universal to all common genres. As we lay we lay the theory groundwork, I will help your student explore the particular genres they are interested in whether it be classical, pop/rock, worship, hymn-writing, jazz… just about anything, really! Or if they're not sure, we can explore!
I am a Vancouver native and Portland-area piano and music composition teacher, and former choir director. I received a Bachelor of Arts and music from Western Washington University. Afterwards, I studied music composition privately with Roger Briggs, and went on do one year of a Masters of Music at Indiana University, where I studied composition with P.Q. Phan. All told, I've been writing my own music for about 14 years, and hope it is in our gracious Lord's will that I will continue to for a long, long time!

Schedule:
Tuesday - Practice Room E - 115: 11:00 am - 4:50 pm
Description:
Hi, I'm Ryan and I would love to give the gift of music to your child! I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Ministry from Multnomah University. You have 3 options. you can learn acoustic guitar, focusing on chord shapes and rhythm. You can learn electric guitar, focusing on chords, arpeggios, lead lines, tabs and tone. Or you can learn bass guitar, focusing on fretboard memorization, tabs, rhythm, and groove. My emphasis and approach is that music should be practical and life-giving. This means there will be a foundation of theory, and scales that every guitarist needs to know but there will be a focus on practical playing and fretboard fluency. There's nothing better than having the freedom to create music! Pricing is $100 per month for weekly 30 min. lessons or $135 for 45 min. lessons.
Requirements:
You'll need the instrument you're learning. If you have an electric guitar or bass, you should have an amplifier. Feel free to ask me about recommendations. In terms of age, there isn't a requirement but I've found that the teenage years are the best period of time to learn guitar. You'll need enough dexterity and hand-eye coordination to learn. I'll purchase curriculum and can be reimbursed.

Description:
I was taught piano for 14 years, 9 of those years under Diane Stevens and the other 5 years of advanced piano under Colleen Adent. I was trained classically but also play chords for worship if you want to learn that instead! Not only will we be starting or continuing with your training but we’ll be looking into the technique of how you play to provide the best comfort for your hands. You will need to get Alfred lesson book 1A and theory book 1A if you are just starting out. If you are continuing piano, I will stick with the books you have been working through. I like to find fun pieces for my students as well if they have a song they want to learn. For that, I acquire a Musescore subscription every fall. Totally optional, it is an extra one time $5 from you if your child wants to learn recognizable songs outside of the lesson books. Please bring a notebook so I can write down your notes for each lesson. You can look back at the notes during the week to know what you need to work on. Please message me in Slack once you've applied so I can touch base with you regarding lesson times, thank you!

I love teaching and do so with creativity, kindness, and FUN! My students and I laugh often at lessons while taking learning seriously! Beginning to Intermediate piano lessons are 30-45 minutes at $110/$155 per month. I incorporate a multi-faceted approach using note-reading, fingering, technique, and ear training. Learning theory through creative games is incorporated at every lesson. Scales, chords and intervals are taught from the beginning with the goal of reading chord charts along with easier note reading. .
