- Writing
Schedule: Wednesday - Classroom - 220: 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm
Description:This beginning writing course (Write to Show Thyself Approved) is for students who are ready to learn how to compose fact and fiction pieces. It covers organizing and note taking to build a formal paragraph. By the end of the year students will be writing reports and stories. Grammar will be taught in context with stories. Students will learn the mechanics of writing as well. There will be required homework each week. I homeschooled 8 children as well as pursued additional teacher training. I love to see kids make progress in academics and so I present the class in a fun & engaging manner. Each child will be able to progress from their own, individual ability to higher levels. We will cover what God has to say about writing and character traits and how we should use our best efforts at improving communication skills.
Requirements:Students taking this class are expected to be already reading and able to write a sentence. Students should also be able to understand and follow directions to participate in classroom activities, such as reading aloud, speaking when requested during the class, respectful listening, and participating in simple in-class writing. All core classes require the family to commit to completing homework. Students will need to bring a 3 ring binder to class for handouts and resources. Also required are pens in black, blue, and red ink.

Chess Club: Beginner Ages 7yr-11yr Tom Snyder Spring 2024 Unsure
- Uncategorized
Schedule: Monday - Computer Lab - 125: 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm
Monday - Art Studio - 129: 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm
Description:This is a class for younger students who want to learn the game of Chess. Chess is great for improving a young person’s concentration and strategic thinking. Educational research has shown that students who learn chess have improved their math abilities, and their general academic performance. Chess Club Beginner 1 will be a 1 hour session each week at FPHRC. This club will be shorter than our clubs for older students and include more playing time and less instruction. Our goals are for the young player to have fun and to learn basic strategy and tactics for winning chess. Every session will include a motivational Chess “Life Lesson” as we discuss what God wants us to learn from life and playing chess. We are thankful to God for the success of the chess program at FPHRC. We have won first place, and third place as a team at chess tournament competitions. This will be Mr. Snyder's third semester at FPHRC. He has a college degree in Graphic Design and a Masters in Teaching from WSUV. He has been a public and private school teacher for the last 16 years. Before that he was an advertising manager, graphic designer, and computer technician. He is currently a professional artist and substitute teacher in six districts in Clark County. He enjoys Bible Study, chess, reading, swimming, and hiking. He is a widower with an adult son and daughter.
Requirements:To be successful in this class students need to be motivated to learn chess and have a desire to become a good chess player.

Genius Hour-Visual Art Special Projects Ages 12yr-19yr+ Tom Snyder Spring 2024 Arts
- General Art
Schedule: Wednesday - Art Studio - 129: 1:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Wednesday - Computer Lab - 125: 1:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Description:Genius Hour was first invented by Google where employees were allowed to use 20% of their time (Fridays) to work on their own ideas for projects. GMail, Google News, and many other profitable ideas came out of this initiative. GeniusHour-Visual Art Special Projects at FPHRC will be an exploration time for students to imagine, create, and share visual art projects. So it will NOT be a classic Genius Hour in that we will limit the projects to visual art, graphics, etc. Some examples: - Produce a children's book on a parable in the Gospels - Paint a large composition illustrating home schooling for a hallway at FPHRC - Produce a sculpture of the Apostle Paul preaching at Athens Guidelines and rules for projects provide safety, moral, and legal guidelines. Here is the basic process: 1. Students will propose a project for approval by parents, the instructor, and the administration 2. Students will plan how to create and share their project 3. Students will produce their project for approval 4. Parents and Students will evaluate and decide the next steps So, Genius Students at FPHRC. Join this class for an adventure in learning. Students will be able to use the computer lab for two hours during class time and by appointment with Mr. Snyder. The computer lab has Wacom screen tablets, Adobe Premier Rush, Gimp, Blender, Audacity, and several other software programs useful to produce projects. Here is a good YouTube to learn more about Genius Hour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMFQUtHsWhc Here is a website for ideas: https://www.geniushourguide.org/ It may have some wrong ideas but it seems to have some helpful information also. Mr. Snyder has accumulated lots of art related supplies. If Mr. Snyder does not have the supplies needed, then parents and students will have to provide them.
Requirements:Art Studio and Computer Lab will be needed for this class.
