How does a confident reader confront a long word she doesn’t know? She breaks it down into parts (i.e. smaller words, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and root words). Master decoding unfamiliar words by knowing consonant sounds, vowel sounds, and how vowel sounds work within individual syllables. Did you know that there are only six types of syllables? Reading long words is easier than you think when you know how to identify and pronounce the different syllable types. Students who take this highly interactive course will make the leap from reading familiar single-syllable words to reading syllables that are parts of multisyllabic words. Activities include spelling practice, proofreading, crossword puzzles, word finds, fill in the blank, categorizing, sorting, and passage reading for fluency and comprehension.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Identify six types of syllables (closed, silent-e, open, r-controlled, consonant-le, double- vowel)
• Recite and correctly apply five syllabication rules
• Isolate, pronounce and spell syllables that are part of list words
• Read with improved speed and accuracy
• Use correctly-spelled list words in own writing
• Become a confident reader!
Requirements:
Prerequisites: The successful incoming student will have phonetic awareness, knowing the 70 basic phonograms that comprise the English language. Students will read aloud in class. Students need to use effective communication skills in group activities including:
Listen attentively by making eye contact, facing the speaker, asking questions, and summarizing what is said,
Ask and respond to questions from teacher and other group members
Explain what has been learned

The title says it all- this class is full of MESSY art! Each week will feature a fun and messy art project with paint, glue, glitter and more! There will be projects that are sensory based and ones that practice small motor skills, utilizing many unconventional art mediums along the way. We'll break out the smocks for this class!
Bible Journaling is a way to respond to Gods word with paint, paper and prayer. We will be going through some small devotionals and introducing different styles of Bible Journaling from paint to printables and bold titles to hidden prayers. Bring a Journaling Bible (I recommend either the Illustrating Bible or an interleaved Bible). If you’d like me to provide a Bible for your student please contact me. I am a visual learner and I know I remember things better when 1. I associate them with color. 2. I spend time with them 3. I involve them while doing something with my hands and 4. I do it with other people. This class is a chance for other learners who are the same way to enjoy time in Gods word together as we study, respond, and make scripture beautiful.
Requirements:
Must have taken scripture art within the last year or have teacher approval first
