Welcome! I look forward to the opportunity of sharing my love of music with your student ages 5-14. I've been playing piano for 9 years, teaching piano lessons at Firmly Planted for 3 years, and am currently majoring in music at Portland Bible College. Piano lessons will be held at the Center on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays between 1-5pm. As a fun way to end the year, all students are welcome to participate in and invite their families to an end of year piano recital I have each year for all my students. This is really an enjoyable time for the students to show what they've learned and for their families to get to watch them perform!

Greetings! My name is Summer St. John, I’m nineteen years old and have been teaching piano for almost five years. I started learning piano at home when I was six, and started taking lessons at age nine. Since then I have not only developed a love for the instrument itself, but sharing the things I have learned through private lessons. I teach beginner-intermediate, note-reading or chord charts, as well as how to play by ear.

This class will go over the fundamentals of music theory and sight reading. Students will learn the basics of how music is written and also develop the ear by learning how to identify different intervals and chords by hearing them. This class will involve some singing as it helps students identify intervals in their heads. This is a great class to develop musicianship, no matter what instrument you play.
This semester, I am starting a new studio offering private music theory lessons, geared toward high school-aged students (15-18) who know how to play their instrument but want to take the next steps with learning theory. (See requirements). Students will begin with the basics (unless already proficient on a given topic): fundamentals, intervals, chords, and scales, and then onto intermediate topics, such as the diatonic chords, the application of scales, chord progressions, keys, theory and rhythm, and so on. Each day constitutes a lesson on a particular topic, and a weekly assignment to apply what we’ve learned. Often, the assignment applies the theory directly to the instrument they are already playing in order to make it relevant to their current study. Lastly, (unless already proficient) lessons will include an introduction the very basics of playing at a keyboard and music reading, since both are integral tools to understanding music theory. If familiar with all of the above, we can begin with advanced theory (e.g. non-diatonic harmony, voice-leading) or wherever any particular student is currently at.
As with all of my lessons that Firmly Planted, I seek to stress the importance of using our God-given talents to serve Him. I seek to model Keith Getty’s charge to musicians: “Be the best musician you can be and make sure that your faith is growing faster than your music.”
Requirements:
Must be at least somewhat proficient at playing their instrument (or voice), for example, at least a year of lessons, or, a self-taught guitar or piano player who knows how to play at least 5 songs (any genre) from beginning to end. Students ages 11 and 14 also possible depending level of musical experience per individual — please contact me in that case
