Wednesday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 10:00 am - 11:50 am
Description:
Students will use hand building techniques (pinching, coil building, slab work and kurinuki) to create functional wares. There will be a variety of follow along projects and time and space for exploring their own ideas. Focus will be invited to give attention to the elements of design as we analyze the thickness of the piece, the feel of the shape in the hand, the balance of any attachments such as handles or knobs, the finish of the piece: does it feel too heavy, too rough, are the joins well attended and clean? We will also explore a variety of surface decoration techniques such as: sgraffito, Mishima, wax and paper resist, and slip trailing.

Details will be related in full at our mandatory parent meeting to be held at 7pm on Monday, February 27th. Parental attendance to this meeting is essential in order to ensure clarity of information and the success of your dancer. Each family is required to have one parent volunteer to help in some way with the show. Please read the updated class syllabus that is posted on the dance department page of this website for more general dance class information.
Receive two classes in one! We will be using Not Consumed Homeschool curriculum called Thrive. The class fee provides the workbook for your student. The homework will include some of workbook pages and the students workout time at home which is tracked in their workbook. Our class can count for a half credit of fitness and a half credit of health with good attendance and when homework is completed. Thrive begins by laying out the foundation that God designed our bodies. Using scripture & science, your teen will receive an education that focuses on stewarding the body they've been gifted. We will discuss various systems and organs in the body to help better understand how our bodies function and how to maintain your health. We will discuss the five components of physical fitness and do workouts together that will be encouraging and tracked by every student. Discovering what fuels our bodies, exploring the fundamental principals of nutrition, and how to apply these in order to make wise choices about food, drinks, and other substances. Your student will learn what it means to THRIVE as they lead a healthy, balanced life that honors God. I am thrilled to offer this class again!

While this is primarily a hands-on class, students will also be keeping a pottery notebook in which they will be encouraged to write notes, journal and sketch throughout the week. This taps into some art, design and science studies. They’ll be learning basic terminology of the ceramics studio from kiln to kaolin as they study temperatures and techniques, form and function.
