Apprenticeship with Miss Tracy is a studio-based, hands-on learning experience that can offer an invaluable window into the career of a studio ceramic artist. This age-old model of transference of craft skills, ideas, and practice will provide a unique learning opportunity for your student. In this class we will discuss in-class helper guidelines tips and techniques, studio equipment training, and chore expectations. Apprentices will be trained in all the nuances and needs of the duties that are unique to our studio as well as discussion/exposure to alternative types of studio environments.
Requirements:
Apprentices need to help in some of the scheduled classes being held in the ceramics studio. Any class Apprentices choose for their own study will be billed at a 25% reduced fee for every hour of class they help in. Apprentices will be invited to assist in studio activities such as kiln loading and unloading as well as private use of the studio when no classes are present. Additionally I will request occasional studio work days for tidying the studio between sessions and general maintenance of shared class tools and supplies.
Students will use hand building techniques (pinching, coil building, slab work and kunikuri) to create functional wares. Functional wares are items such as: mug, plate, platter, charcuterie board, bowl, spoon etc. Focus will be invited to give attention to the thickness of the piece, the finish of the piece: does it feel too heavy, too rough, are the joins well attended and clean? Creativity is invited to the class as well, functional pottery can be fun! No previous pottery experience needed. Bring sketch book and pencil.
Students will learn hand building techniques with a mid-range clay body. The focus of the projects will be sculptural in form. Potential projects: wind chimes, garden art, figurines, luminaries. The focus will be on form and decoration with attention to the drying process and nurturing your project(s) through all the stages of greenware. Previous experience with clay is not required. Bring sketch book and pencil.
