Join us for this challenge based Engineering course in which students will apply STEM concepts to solve problems they may encounter in the real world! Students will work individually or as teams each unit to create a solution to the unit challenge, with some guidance from the teacher. Examples of challenges that will be implemented in class include: The Bridge Challenge, Designing an earthquake-proof building, The Perched Water-Proof Pot, etc. Concluding the course, students will present their favorite work on the final day of class.
***BECAUSE OF THE HANDS ON NATURE OF THIS COURSE IT REQUIRES 1-2 PARENT ASSISTANTS, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO BE AN ASSISTANT IN THIS CLASS YOUR STUDENT GETS A 50% DISCOUNT ON THEIR TEACHER FEES. To be an assistant in this class simply register yourself the same way you registered your child.

Schedule:
Monday - Classroom - 135: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Description:
This is a CORE class that meets once a week for the full year. Parents are required to attend the mandatory Core Parent Meeting immediately following Family Orientation on either August 24th at 2pm, August 24th at 6pm, September 7th at 2pm, or September 7th at 6pm.
This course curriculum was developed by the teacher based on student feedback from previous texts - content falls somewhere between Friendly Chemistry and Apologia Chemistry. Fall term will focus on a thorough understanding of atoms, molecules, and the periodic table, while spring term will apply stoichiometry to various chemical principles. This is a full-year course intended to satisfy a student’s high school science credit requirements and must be taken alongside Mr. Ringnalda's chemistry lab (you will automatically be enrolled in both at the time of registration). Teacher will supplement the text content, administer labs, grade tests, and provide an overall course grade based on test scores, homework completion, and in-class participation. Parents will administer tests at home, sign off on all homework assignments, and maintain communication through Slack.
Requirements:
Students must have passed Algebra 1 with a B or better (contact the teacher prior to registration if this is a concern) - many chemistry problems involve solving for an unknown, unit conversions/dimensional analysis, and simplifying exponents. Students must bring the textbook, a calculator WITH DISPLAY (such as: https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-Engineering-Scientific-Calculator/dp/B004NB[…]4894100&sprefix=graphing%2Bcalculato%2Caps%2C244&sr=8-14&th=1), a pencil, a highlighter, post-its or other sticky bookmarks, and a spiral bound notebook with pocket folder to class. Materials fee includes the textbook provided by the teacher. Parents must sign off on weekly homework assignments and electronically input scores for supplementary problems once per chapter (10 chapters).

PREREQUISITE - must have completed fall/winter term in order to register for this class. Not accepting new students.
This course is an overview of basic chemistry concepts for high school students. We will be using Apologia's Chemistry, 3rd edition, as our text. As a core class, students will receive a grade based mainly on module scores. We will spend our class time reviewing the week's lesson and
conducting labs. We will cover one module every two weeks.
Students will need access to Google Classroom. Tests will not be conducted during class time but will be posted on the Classroom stream with a due date given. Instructions for testing will be given in class.
Students need to bring a pen or pencil, their lab notebook, and their textbook.

Schedule:
Tuesday - Classroom - 228: 3:00 pm - 3:50 pm
Description:
The game of Chess is 1500 years old and remains one of the most popular strategy games of all time. It is played in many places by all ages, all over the world. If this isn’t already exciting, it is also important to note that chess improves memory skills, social skills, perspective, creativity, and critical thinking. The Basics of Chess class will emphasize all of these skills plus teach healthy competition. The class is designed for the student who is just learning chess or has a basic understanding and wants to improve skills. The board, set up, pieces, and strategies will be taught along with some healthy and fair competition.
The material fee will cover your student's own personal chess board and book.
This class is probably not for your student if….
your student is already very good at chess
your student is extremely competitive (sometimes students get upset losing, but if this is a consistent behavior the class will not be a good fit)
your student cannot sit still through a board game
your student is extremely talkative
