Introduction to Ukulele Ages 8yr-11yr Fitzpatrick, Shiela Fall 2024 Music
- Instrumental
Schedule: Tuesday - Music Room - 117: 11:00 am - 11:50 am
Description:Aloha! Come with me and learn to play fun songs on the ukulele! You will learn about all the parts that make up your instrument, how to hold it, how to tune it, and how to pick/strum the strings. We will also go over the history of the ukulele and do basic note/tablature reading. Shiela Fitzpatrick is a wife and mother of three in Vancouver, WA. She was raised in beautiful Hawaii, where she developed a deep love of the ocean, art, music, and God. She was introduced to playing music in early elementary with the ukulele. This started her journey of learning other instruments such as the guitar, drums, bass, and later playing in a few bands. Shiela served 6 years as a Combat Medic (NREMT) in the United States Army, where she received multiple awards due to her dedication and hard work. After some time with the Firmly Planted community along with a passion for learning, she has been inspired to teach at the center by offering the class, “Introduction to Ukulele”.
Requirements:Students will need a soprano ukulele, a tuner, the ability to read letters/count, and great listening skills. I highly encourage students to practice a few times a week at home to get the most out of this class. (I can provide links to recommended instruments if needed).

- Writing
Schedule: Wednesday - Classroom - 228: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Description:This Spring we are bringing back the Daily Planted (FPHRC student newsletter) with some changes. This Spring the newsletter will come out once a month. The total number of kids for this the journalism crew will be ten, but each will be writing on a rotating basis. Beat sheets will be given out each month that the students will choose their articles from. The class will consist of a meeting in which the beat sheet is passed out, articles are decided on and explained. Students will learn through practice, editing, and application. Different articles will be written such as (interviews, front page, culture pieces, columns, calendars, recipes, etc.). The point of Daily Planted is to bring FPHRC news home to the families! This is not a traditional writing class, therefore students should be able to write a few clear paragraphs on one topic. Also, assigned work for this class will have monthly deadlines that will need to be taken seriously. Each student signed up for this course should place an example of their writing in mailbox 194- written by hand prior to class. This writing sample should explain who the student is and what some of their favorite hobbies are and why they are interested in journalism for FPHRC. I have a wide age range for this course because I want to include all writing levels if possible. This means that the signup list and waiting list will be fluid as I work out the age of the crew For older students this class can be listed on transcripts, as well as resumes.
