High School Choir Ages 14yrs-19yrs+ Metz, Jonathan Fall 2025 Music
- Vocal
Schedule: Tuesday - Music Room - 117: 10:30 am - 11:50 am
Description:In Concert Choir at FPHRC, students will have the opportunity to make engaging, quality and beautiful music with others, to take the next steps in their music education, build lasting relationships, and most importantly honor God in each of these. Ensemble music-making is integral to the musical education of every musician whether experienced, or a beginner. They will develop collaborative skills that solo performance does not offer, gain a greater sense of musical artistry through the internalization of music by movement, and gain exposure to different genres and styles of music. Concert Choir carries on the American choral tradition of singing traditional choral literature, along with new literature being written in view of that tradition as well as the worship and church choir tradition. It is also my calling to help students develop a more robust faith in Jesus by understanding their talents can help spread the gospel, and that serving one another both to brings glory to God and helps us make better music. Choir is the perfect place to instill these values.
Requirements:This is a year-long course and full-year commitment is expected so that we are able to build on the skills we learn through the course of the year. Also expected this that students are able to participate in both the Spring and Fall dress rehearsals and concerts. Please make sure you are available to attend the dress rehearsal and concert dates before signing up for both semesters: The Fall dress rehearsal will be on Tuesday Dec. 16, (in the evening, time TBD), and the Fall concert will be on Wednesday, Dec. 17 (in the evening, time TBD). For Spring semester the dress rehearsal will be on Tuesday, May 19, and the concert will be on Wednesday, May 20, (both in the evening, times TBD). Audition and range-check policy: All new students must audition. Returning students do not need to audition but may be asked to schedule a range-check. Returning students aged 14 are required to schedule a range-check either before the first day of choir or within the first two weeks. - Bible
Schedule: Monday - Classroom - 224: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Wednesday - Classroom - 224: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Description:What is truth? Why are we here? How should we live? This course invites students into the adventure of thinking deeply about life’s biggest questions. We begin by exploring the universal questions all people face. Then, students will learn how to think clearly and critically—using tools like logic, the Socratic method, and Scripture. As we read from great thinkers like Plato, Saint Augustine, and C.S. Lewis, students will see how reason and faith are not opposed but work together in the pursuit of truth. They’ll learn to recognize patterns of thought, ask meaningful questions, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. As Proverbs 4:7 says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” This course is an invitation into that pursuit—an education of the mind and heart, rooted in the Truth. The course is taught from a Christian worldview and culminates in seeing how Jesus—the Logos—brings coherence, purpose, and meaning to the deepest longings of the human mind and heart.
Requirements:Students should be able to read and understand high school-level texts. They don’t need to be deep thinkers yet, but they should come ready to grow. This course invites them to read with care, reflect with sincerity, and wrestle with meaningful ideas. What matters most is a willing mind and heart. Each student will need to bring their own Bible to class, as Scripture readings will not be printed. Students should also come prepared with a notebook for note-taking and something to write with. A pen will be required for occasional in-class quizzes. As part of the supply fee, each student will receive a high-quality binder filled with printed readings, reflection worksheets, and carefully selected excerpts from classic texts. These materials are theirs to annotate, reflect on, and keep beyond the course. Students are expected to bring their binder to every class and keep it organized with the weekly materials provided.
