Meet the Masters Ages 7yrs-10yrs Bates, Carol Fall 2026 Arts
- General Art
Schedule: Monday - Art Studio - 129: 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Description:In this art class students will have an opportunity to study master artists and then recreate their works, putting their own unique touches on them. Most of their creations will take two class periods or possibly three, depending on the complexity of the artwork. Some of the masters we will be studying will be Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Picasso, and Monet. Whether your child finds creative artwork easy, or your child is just beginning to develop their skills as an artist, this class is for you. I will walk them through each step of recreating a masterpiece.
Requirements:Weekly attendance is very important as many of our projects will take 2 to 3 classes to complete. If your child is sick, please notify me on Slack so that I can set aside the materials they need to work on it at home. NOTE: We will be working primarily with acrylic paints which do not wash out of clothes easily. Please send one adult/oversize t-shirt with your child’s name on it that you do not mind getting paint on. I can store the shirts in the closet for them to wear while they are painting.

- Reading
Schedule: Monday - Classroom - 228: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Wednesday - Classroom - 228: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Description:How does a confident reader confront a long word she doesn’t know? She breaks it down into parts (i.e. smaller words, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and root words). Master decoding unfamiliar words by knowing consonant sounds, vowel sounds, and how vowel sounds work within individual syllables. Did you know that there are only six types of syllables? Reading long words is easier than you think when you know how to identify and pronounce the different syllable types. Students who take this highly interactive course will make the leap from reading familiar single-syllable words to reading syllables that are parts of multisyllabic words. Activities include spelling practice, proofreading, crossword puzzles, word finds, fill in the blank, categorizing, sorting, and passage reading for fluency and comprehension. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Identify six types of syllables (closed, silent-e, open, r-controlled, consonant-le, double- vowel) • Recite and correctly apply five syllabication rules • Isolate, pronounce and spell syllables that are part of list words • Read with improved speed and accuracy • Use correctly-spelled list words in own writing • Become a confident reader!
Requirements:Prerequisite: Incoming students must have a foundation of phonics and be able to read short stories with multiple paragraphs.
