Astronomy Ages 15yr-18yr Andrew Ringnalda Fall 2021 Science
- General Science
Schedule:
Description:Astronomy might be considered the first science. Charting the movements of the stars and planets was one of man’s earliest "scientific" endeavors. We will be using Dr. Sarah Salviander’s Astronomy and Astrophysics materials. This class uses an online text that can be found at https://sixdayscience.com/curriculum/textbooks/. Students will need to purchase the Activity & Lab Book and the Exam Book to comply with the course’s user agreement. Further information will be sent after registration. We’ll be using the course Biblical Supplement along with the regular course materials to demonstrate that astronomy and Biblical teaching are not in conflict. This is a full-year course intended to satisfy a student’s high school science credit requirements. A student should have familiarity with algebra, and we will review math concepts as necessary. Requires Astronomy and Astrophysics Lab and Activities e-book, Astronomy and Astrophysics Test Book. Some labs will require nighttime sky viewing. Prerequisite: Algebra Homework: 5+ hours/week, some labs will require nighttime sky viewing

- Engineering
Schedule:
Description:Are you a Lego Maniac? Do you have experience building with Lego Technic? Join us this fall to have your Lego design and building skills challenged to the max with a series of increasingly difficult projects. Students will work in groups for a variety of projects: Cross-the-Gap, Bucket-ball, Sumo-bots, Mechanical Orangutan, Cat-Blaster, and more! NOTE: THIS IS NOT A FREE BUILD CLASS! Students are expected to be fully engaged in the projects and helping solve each problem as a team member. Experience building with Lego Technic is helpful but not an absolute requirement. Introduction to Scientific Research Ages 14yr-18yr Andrew Ringnalda Fall 2021 Science
Schedule:
Description:The scientific method is mentioned, almost in passing, in most science textbooks. A detailed, practical study of the scientific method is usually reserved for students in their junior or senior years of college. You can start early. Introduction to Scientific Research explores how to use the scientific method to evaluate questions related to the physical world. We will perform a number of experiments to illustrate how science works, we will use the Mentos/Coke reaction to conduct a full-scale research project, and students will pursue research on a topic of their own interest in the spring semester. You will learn how to communicate your findings through lab reports and scientific research papers. This is a full-year class. There are no prerequisites except curiosity about the natural world. Students should have some experience writing reports and essays, but you will learn that scientific writing has its own style and purpose. Students should have access to a laptop that they can bring to class, a calculator will be needed for some labs. Homework: 1-3 hours per week, more as students work on their own projects

- Physics
Schedule:
Description:This class is intended for middle- to early high-school aged students who are beginning a formal study of the sciences or continuing an introduction to general scientific concepts before diving in to high school biology or chemistry. Apologia texts are designed for self-teaching, so students should expect to spend about an hour each day working through the textbook material. This class constitutes the lab component for Physical Science. We will perform the labs from the text, with two weeks being allotted for each module. This is a full-year science class. Hands on Physics: Mechanics and Motion Ages 14yr-18yr Giselle Veach Fall 2021 Science
- Physics
Schedule:
Description:Join us for hands on Physics. This hybrid course is an exploration of high school physics from the perspective of the real world, taught through the eyes of an engineer. We'll learn about the equations of motion, mechanics and kinematics through experimentation, learning the laws of our world through experience in order to then carry this understanding into the future. Work with the teacher to understand the laws of physics as you create reports on your experiments, and then use what you learn in the term challenge, where you will apply your physics equations in a challenge build. Bring a notebook, pencil, scientific calculator, ruler, compass, protractor, eraser, scissors. Homework will be assigned bi-weekly in the form of physics reports on the section topic. Students will have two weeks to complete their reports. Homework will be assigned bi-weekly in the form of physics reports on the section topic.
