Schedule: Wednesday - Preschool A - 131: 3:00 pm - 3:50 pm
Description:The game of Chess is 1500 years old and remains one of the most popular strategy games of all time. It is played in many places by all ages, all over the world. If this isn’t already exciting, it is also important to note that chess improves memory skills, social skills, perspective, creativity, and critical thinking. The Basics of Chess class will emphasize all of these skills plus teach healthy competition. The class is designed for the student who is just learning chess or has a basic idea and wants to improve skills. The board, set up, pieces, and strategies will be taught along with some healthy and fair competition. Material fees will cover student's personal chess board and book. This class is probably not for your student if…. your student is already very good at chess your student is extremely competitive (sometimes students get upset losing, but if this is a consistent behavior the class will not be a good fit) your student cannot sit still through a board game your student is extremely talkative

Fractions Ages 9yr-13yr Collette Connor Winter/Spring 2021 Math
Schedule: Monday - Classroom - 224: 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Wednesday - Classroom - 224: 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Description:This is part 2 of a year-long class. New students may be accepted provided they meet with the teacher first and get approval. This will be a fun class as we work consistently through the Math U See Epsilon Fractions Book. No previous experience with fractions is required. However a solid foundation in multiplication and division is needed. I will be using the Math U See manipulatives, skip counting pages, and regular 5 minute math tests. I have 5 kids, have been homeschooling for 27 years, and teaching other students for about 15 years so I understand how different each student can be. As a teacher my goal is to help them succeed even if math is not their strongest subject. Their assignments will consist of about 20 questions a day and 1 quiz a week. I have learned how vital the parents role is in the student’s success. Consistency is definitely the key in math! Therefore, I'm looking forward to working together and getting to know you and your student! This is a two day a week class.

Journalism: The Daily Planted Ages 9yr-18yr Amy Azevedo Winter/Spring 2021 Language Arts
- Writing
Schedule: Wednesday - Classroom - 228: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Description:This Spring we are bringing back the Daily Planted (FPHRC student newsletter) with some changes. This Spring the newsletter will come out once a month. The total number of kids for this the journalism crew will be ten, but each will be writing on a rotating basis. Beat sheets will be given out each month that the students will choose their articles from. The class will consist of a meeting in which the beat sheet is passed out, articles are decided on and explained. Students will learn through practice, editing, and application. Different articles will be written such as (interviews, front page, culture pieces, columns, calendars, recipes, etc.). The point of Daily Planted is to bring FPHRC news home to the families! This is not a traditional writing class, therefore students should be able to write a few clear paragraphs on one topic. Also, assigned work for this class will have monthly deadlines that will need to be taken seriously. Each student signed up for this course should place an example of their writing in mailbox 194- written by hand prior to class. This writing sample should explain who the student is and what some of their favorite hobbies are and why they are interested in journalism for FPHRC. I have a wide age range for this course because I want to include all writing levels if possible. This means that the signup list and waiting list will be fluid as I work out the age of the crew For older students this class can be listed on transcripts, as well as resumes.
