Note Taking 101 Ages 11yr-18yr Ellie Tauscher Fall 2022 Language Arts
Schedule: Tuesday - Classroom - 228: 10:00 am - 10:50 am
Description:This class will be a multi-sensory, multimodal approach to taking notes in a way that’s both enjoyable and memorable! We will cover taking notes on a variety of content and multiple different note taking styles so each student will have opportunity to fine-tune their abilities to make their notes work for them and find a way they enjoy and understand. We will look at different systems, using shapes and colors as memory aids, digital vs physical note taking and how to study from your notes as well as SO much more! Here’s a peek at what our syllabus looks like: Weeks 1-3 we will cover note taking basics like how to take notes, format your notes, mark up your notes and study from them so you are equipped with the basic understanding of what note taking COULD look like for you. Weeks 4-9 we will take notes on a variety of lengths and styles of videos (starting short and getting longer) so we can try out our different note taking styles and begin see what works and doesn’t work for each student. As they get more comfortable we will try videos without subtitles/written points and the videos will get longer to test the quality of our notes and our abilities to study from them. Weeks 10-12 we will transition to the written word by taking notes on both fiction and non fiction writing with specific focus on sifting and retaining information from textbooks, academic articles, and scripture. We will look at ways to identify important vs relevant information and how to summarize to avoid plagiarism as well. Week 13-15 we will finish off with LIVE GUEST SPEAKERS who will talk to the class on a subject they’re passionate about and then we will have quizzes after each speaker finishes to see how well they did on taking notes and absorbing the information presented. In our final week we will evaluate what they’ve learned and celebrate their progress! This progress party will be a chance for them to show off how their note taking styles has changed throughout the term and to evaluate what worked and did not work for them. They’ll also have a chance to share what they’d like to try differently in the future and we might play a game which requires note taking as well if time allows. ;) If you made it all the way through this description thank you! If you have any questions PLEASE feel free to reach out! I have spent years taking notes and learning what did and did not work for me and if I can help save you and your student some of the many headaches it gave me figuring it out on my own I would love to. My heart is to give every student the opportunity to thrive by figuring out what will work best in a way they’ll best understand and I will do my part to provide excellent feedback and constructive suggestions to guide them toward their goals.
Requirements:Must be a fluent writer. They can bring their own notebook/paper or take one provided by me on the first day of class, but they are required to bring that notebook every class thereafter.
