Coding with Scratch - M Ages 8yr-14yr Elora Neal Winter/Spring 2021

Description:Beginning and intermediate students follow simple instruction to become an expert coder using the popular block-based visual programming language Scratch. Develop the essential skills needed to work with code, including problem-solving and critical thinking. Students will learn to create and customize their own projects. Each student must have a Scratch account prior to the first class. The instructor will need login information, such as the email address and password associated with each account, in order to help students log in each week. Accounts can be created at scratch.mit.edu. Students should use their real name as their username. [Parents: the Scratch website is run by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is intended to be safe for children to use. The online version of Scratch works well on Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu computers.]

Hands On Chemistry Ages 12yr-16yr Melanie Neal Winter/Spring 2021 Science

Description:PREREQUISITE - must have completed fall/winter term in order to register for this class. This year-long course teaches Chemistry from the Classical approach, promoting hands-on learning through science experiments, sketching, narration, and other activities. Students will focus on written work, aquisition of facts, memorization of vocabulary words, and more as we learn about the fascinating world of Science. Complete lab records and reports will be kept by each student, and they will also write narrative summaries of their reading and make timeline entries. This class is designed to have something for every type of learner. Colorful fact books make the content much more approachable to the younger student, and are helpful (but not necessary) for the student to have on hand.  Each student will need their own copy of the Chemistry For The Logic Stage Student Guide by Elemental Science. Our sequence of study begins with the building blocks of Chemistry (Atoms, Ions, Metals, the elements of The Periodic Table) and moves to Principles in Chemistry. Here we will cover Solutions, Chemical Reactions, and Acids & Bases. Semester Two will cover the Chemistry of Life (Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of the Human Body, etc.)and the Chemistry of Industry (Soaps, Alloys, Farming, Coal & Oil products, Polymers, Adhesives, Ceramics, Fibers, Pigments, etc.). Students will be expexted to complete 1-3 hours of homework each week, participate fully in all experiments, and keep accurate lab reports. Experimental Watercolor Techniques Ages 10yr-16yr Melanie Neal Winter/Spring 2021 Arts

Description:Learn to understand and master the art of watercolor. Learn to relax with your art, turn your mistakes into something beautiful, and discover the joy that creating with this versatile technique can bring, In this course, using pictures of different animals as a starting point, you will learn to draw them both realistically and in a more creative way. We will then paint these guided projects with watercolor, gouache, and other more experimental techniques. Each student will complete 8 works in this course. With each artwork we will apply different techniques, and the level of complexity will go from least to greatest.You will know the different basic watercolor techniques (dry stroke, wet stroke, dry on dry, dry on wet, wet on wet, and wet on dry) and the key to painting with ease in watercolor: be open to error. Basic drawing skills are helpful for this course, but not required.

Description:This class is a space where children can be their most creative selves. Hands-on art, creating whatever your child can imagine. Painting, drawing, jewelry making, fashion design, and sculpting all happen during studio time, plus more! This class offers minimal instruction and maximum expression. The goal of this class is not to create one size fits all art projects, but rather to give the students the space and ability to let their unique inner artist come out and play. Please wear clothes that can get messy.

MARS Base Camp- STEM Challenge Ages 7yr-12yr Melanie Neal Winter/Spring 2021 Science

Description:The race to land humans on Mars is on! Utilizing the 2020 4-H STEM Challenge and hands-on activities, we will explore what it takes to make a manned mission to another planet a possibility. We will complete a collection of games, projects, and activities that teach your students about STEM skills like mechanical engineering, physics, and agriculture. With the Landing Zone Surveyor activity, we will attempt to land on Mars and discover features that are important for setting up a base camp. In Crop Curiosity, kids will learn about biology, environmental science, and agriculture to grow nutritionally efficient food on Mars. (Interested students may take it further at home, learning Computer Sciences with Insight To Mars, an activity that teaches kids to code and share a discovery they made on Mars using CS First and Scratch.) Students will each keep a discovery log as they explore the red planet. Once we’ve learned what a trip to Mars will require, on to Red Planet Odyssey, an unplugged activity where kids will use engineering skills to build a vehicle that can explore the surface of Mars! We will learn about our solar system, outer space, and about some of the amazing people who explore it.

Description:I’m a fellow homeschool mom and ASHA certified Speech Language Pathologist with 10 years clinical experience. I have experience and specialized training in differential diagnosis and treatment of pediatric stuttering, voice disorders, articulation delays, expressive and receptive language disorders, social communication disorders as well as sensory differences. In addition, I treat children with motor-and sensory-based feeding difficulties. I love working alongside children and homeschool families and I’m here to help! SLP Evaluation/Consultations are $80 and are approximately 1 hour and include a formal assessment as well as written report and recommendations. Weekly treatment can also be provided for children on an as needed basis. Weekly treatment is $30 for each 30 minute session with comprehensive family training, home practice and progress plan included. Description:This will be a fun adventure into what it means to be a hero! The first book we will read is George Washington's Socks. In this adventure five kids get transported back in time to the Battle at Trenton smack in the middle of the American Revolution. The kids will meet some famous names in the founding of our country including George Washington and have to make some hard-heroic decisions. The second book we will read will be Ereth's Birthday. This book focuses on a foul tempered porcupine who may expect a little too much from his best friend and ends up an unlikely hero in the end. The third book will be Hatchet. In this book, a 13 year old boy finds himself a victim of a small plane crash in the jungle and moves through a journey of survival and healing. This class will focus on character building through discussion, writing book reports IEW style, and reading. Please purchase the following books being read in class: Hatchet by Gary Paulson, Ereth's Birthday by AVI, and George Washington's Socks by Elvira Woodruff (all available on Amazon). An hour of homework expected each week. Mondays AND Wednesdays.
