Clay Play A: Ceramics for Littles Ages 3yr-6yr Sia Hoyt Spring 2022 Arts
- Ceramics
Schedule: Monday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm
Description:The name says it all. This is a hands-on lovely class with clay, water, shells, a canvas tablecloth and wooden tools. Tactile contact is one of the first experiences we have in this life; it is at our roots. So touching clay and experiencing ceramic art is a very grounding experience for students. Over the course of our 16 weeks together, students aged 3/4 will make some thumbprint ornaments, hand print tiles and, inevitably, sweet little sculptural pieces. Starting with pinch pots, 5/6 yr olds will be making faces, little cups and bowls to use for tea (or their daily dose of elderberry) at home. They will also learn to decorate! Designed for parents and their young students, this class has become a lovely time of parent socialization while the littles have plenty of freedom to explore the wonderful medium of clay! In this class parents get to make little things, too. Some Notes: -We fire the pottery here at the center and students will be able to take home their finished pieces. -Students ages 5 and up will have some minimal cleanup chores, like washing the wooden tools in the provided water buckets and wiping down their areas after glazing days. -Please plan to stay for class if your student is 3/4 years old.

Pottery Workshop Ages 10yr-18yr Sia Hoyt Spring 2022 Arts
- Ceramics
Schedule: Tuesday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 11:00 am - 12:50 pm
Description:A fun pottery workshop for students 10-18. Try out the pottery wheel. Carve, cut and bond the clay. Draw and sketch ideas. Learn fresh designs. Press shells, plants and leaves into tiles. Spend an hour decorating and carving your pots. Learn the art of glazing. Students are bound to have a lot of fun together in this messy adventure of learning the old craftsmanship of wheel throwing and more. Creating with their own two hands using water and clay, students will learn the basics of handbuilding, bringing their ideas to the table and to the wheel. Students will learn terminology of the ceramics studio from Kiln to Kaolin...they will also tap into some of the chemistry names for clay and glaze ingredients and learn a bit about the firing process and how their pottery goes in and out of the fire, and to what temperatures. Tapping into their creativity as they work within the structured boundaries of the orderly ceramics studio, this class is also excellent for socialization, teamwork and cheering each other on. I teach my students to help build up a strong environment in their classroom by building each other up. The ceramic studio becomes a source of art therapy, camaraderie and joy for them. Some notes: -We fire all student work here at the center and students will be able to take home their finished pieces. -The finished pottery they will be creating will have undergone several stages of wet, “leather -hard”, trimming and decorating, first fire, decoration, second fire. So it’s a really big deal when they receive their first finished pots from the kiln room. Look for that day when they get to bring them home! -Students will have setup and cleanup chores, sometimes taking water buckets outside to roll buckets in and out of the back doors. -Our pro ceramics studio provides several wheels, a slab roller, a pug mill, an array of mid-range glazes, a kiln and all the tools and supplies one would need. ***ATTENTION WHEEL THROWING STUDENTS**** We have just expanded the age range of this class to accommodate more wheel throwing enthusiasts of all skill levels: Beginning, intermediate and advanced. This will remain a part hand building part wheel throwing class and Miss Sia will meet your student at their level and help them to improve and have fun.

- Ceramics
Schedule: Monday - Ceramics Studio - 004: 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm
Description:Junior ceramic students are bound to have a lot of fun together in this class as they learn the old craftsmanship of working with clay. Tactile contact is one of the first experiences we have in this life; it is at our roots. So touching clay and experiencing ceramic art is a very grounding experience for students. In this class students will be learning about decoration, carving, smoothing, sculpting and construction in clay, including slip & score techniques and pinch pots. Over the course of our 16 weeks together, some projects we will be doing include: design and picture tiles, nature collection trays, stamped/carved mugs and vases made from slabs, beautiful little cylinder planters, candle lanterns, pendants, wall hangings, mobile and and sculptural busts. This class will be learning a lot about border designs and filler designs and patterns, weaving the art of drawing into their clay projects. As they work within the structured boundaries of the orderly ceramics studio, your student will have plenty of creative freedom. This is both for the confident independent junior artists and for thoughtful or hesitant artists. I teach my students to help build up a strong environment in their classroom by building each other up so the ceramic studio can become a source of art therapy, camaraderie and joy for them. Some Notes: -We fire the pottery here at the center and students will be able to take home their finished pieces. And whatever functional creations they make can be used in the home, garden and kitchen! We use non toxic food safe glazes and everything that gets fired can be used in the everyday. -Students will have some cleanup chores, like washing the wooden tools and sponges in the provided water buckets and wiping down their areas after glazing days. -The finished pottery they will be creating will have undergone several stages of wet, “leather -hard”, trimming and decorating, first fire, decoration, second fire. So it’s a really big deal when they receive their first finished pots from the kiln room. -Here at our pro ceramics studio we fire to cone 6, providing for elementary students an abundance of clay, a rainbow array of mid-range glazes and all the tools and supplies one would need.
