Description:Who's hungry to learn about the cornucopia of foods that are enjoyed around the world? Get ready to have fun and gain cultural perspective while making simple recipes from the countries explored in our Globetrotters Treehouse class! Students will leave with a multicultural recipe book, an apron of their own, lots of tasty treats, and an assortment of new cooking and kitchen skills. We will discover how each country uses their own unique ingredients and resources to create tasty, healthy meals. *Recipes are allergy-friendly. Let the teacher know ASAP if your child has food allergies.
Requirements:Students must be enrolled in Globetrotters Treehouse in order to take this class. Globetrotter students will be automatically enrolled in this course - Contact the class coordinator if you do not wish to be enrolled. Students will be encouraged to follow 3-step directions, work independently, ask for help if needed, take turns and show kindness and respect to the teacher and fellow classmates. With cooking, there can be potentially dangerous equipment or heat. It's very important that children obey our classroom safety rules.

In this class we will learn the art of measuring, reading recipes, knife skills, nutrition, and making simple meals and snacks. Description:This class is designed for middle and high school students grades 6-12. It is a year-long course. Section 1: Reading to Write: Students will need to purchase Madeline l'Engle's, "A Wrinkle in Time." The book will be read mostly as homework with discussion questions (in class and at home). Students will produce an essay based on their reading. Basic essay skills will be taught as well in this section. Section 2: Research Skills and Essay Writing: Students will write a research paper and learn how to properly cite sources (MLA format, in text and bibliography). Students will receive guidance on how to research effectively but will be granted choice in their topics (Center appropriate). Students are expected to use both print and digital sources. A presentation of the research will be given at the end of the unit. Section 3: Public Speaking and Life Skills: The class will also cover public speaking. Students will do speech where they learn how to write cue cards and speak confidently. This class will also cover interview skills and basic resume writing. Students will need, a writer's notebook, pencil, highlighters, sticky notes, and "A Wrinkle in Time." A computer and internet at home will be needed. in order to access print sources for their research, the public library may be needed as well. Students will submit work through Google Classroom. Students will be given a letter grade at the end of each semester to receive credit for their transcript. Therefore, they should anticipate weekly homework.

Draw•Write•Now Ages 6yr-10yr Lucinda Brown Fall 2023 Arts

Description:This is a hybrid drawing and handwriting class for young students between the ages of 6-10*. Using both Draw•Write•Now and Getty-Dubay® Italic Handwriting Series, students will enjoy an in-person studio class and an additional short weekly video from the comfort of home. The in-person studio class will be devoted mostly to a weekly drawing focus, while the online video will be focused on learning italic-style handwriting - a lovely, stylish, and easy-to-read method. This handwriting course begins with basic italic and a gradual introduction to italic cursive for the first semester, then transitions to italic cursive during the second semester. For the drawing portion in Fall Semester, students will be using Book 1, On The Farm, Kids And Critters, Storybook Characters. The main goal is to develop fine motor skills in drawing and handwriting strokes, and have fun doing it! This is ideally a year-long course. Please note that students will be expected to watch a video (assigned most weeks) and also spend a minimum of 15 minutes on daily handwriting practice. *(age is flexible, and at the parent’s and teacher’s discretion)
Requirements:Students will be required to have Book D of the Getty-Dubay handwriting curriculum in order to be in compliance with the publisher's requirements. Miss Lucinda will also provide a student notebook for handwriting and drawing that will be specifically made for this class. A book fee of $25 per student is listed for the books and the use of necessary art supplies. All books and supplies will be provided during the first class. ** Supply & teacher payments are due August 28th. Families must respond to Groupzu invoices by this deadline to keep their standing in the class.**

IEW Writing: U.S. History (Spring) Ages 14yr-18yr Shelley Rose Spring 2023 Language Arts

Description:This year-long class can be used for one high school English credit as well as one History credit. Students will use the textbook, Advanced U.S. History-based Writing Lessons by IEW, Institute for Excellence in Writing, to learn structure and style in writing. Students will complete thirty-one writing lessons while they work on note-taking and writing outlines, retelling a narrative story, summarizing multiple references, writing from pictures, inventive writing, formal essay models, formal critique, advanced essay models with a super essay, nine-paragraph essay, and a persuasive essay. Students will also work on using in-text citations and creating bibliographies. Students will also read eleven books. The literature includes; The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon Leyson, The old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the Gardener by Sarah Stewart, Co. Aytch-A Civil War Narrative by Sam R. Watkins, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, and Anne Frank-The Diary of a Young Girl. Books may be read, listened to, or watched if they are a movie. Parents, please be aware that some of these are war stories and may have graphic content and may not be appropriate for your student. Use discretion. These books will be discussed in class including discussions on the setting and context of the books, the characters, conflicts, resolutions, themes, and lessons learned from the books. There will also be writing assignments for some of these books. For the history credit, the students will read the book A Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen. Students will read about thirty pages a week from this book, create a U.S. History timeline that will gain five to ten new events a week, and choose one event that was discussed in the book and either defend the author's position or disagree with it. This will be a written response and the students must back up their position with facts. Timelines and responses will be discussed respectfully in class.
Requirements:Parents must help their students at home. This class is for experienced IEW students. Students will need an editor. Students are not allowed to take this course on Zoom. Students must attend class. Zoom attendance is for emergencies or sickness only. Students must have a Student Resource Notebook. A free download comes with the IEW book, or it can be purchased at IEW.com. Students will need the Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons Student Book and the Teacher Manual. The Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen can be purchased on Amazon, or possibly at Exodus Books. The Literature books mentioned above can also be purchased either on Audible, Amazon or at Exodus Books. Exodus Books is in Oregon City but I usually have them shipped to my house. Please pay for this class in full by the end of the first week of class or make arrangements with me for payments. You can slack message me about arrangements.

Description:This class is an engaging introduction into ballet, tap, and tumbling for boys and girls! This is a fast moving class where your child will be able to learn easy dance steps, fun choreography, and be able to use some props and costumes! Ballet and Tap shoes are required for this class. Suggested attire- Girls: pink tights, leotard, and skirt as well as hair pulled back in a bun. Boys: t-shirt and sweatpants. Students will be performing in a Winter Showcase on January 19th as well as the Spring Dance Show in May (16th-19th). IEW Writing: Following Narnia (Spring) Ages 11yr-13yr Shelley Rose Spring 2023 Language Arts

Description:Using the textbook Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion's Song by IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) students will complete thirty-one writing assignments. During this year-long class, students will write on topics from Narnia stories, history, and science while using all nine of the IEW's structural models including elements of style. Students will practice taking notes and writing outlines for their papers as well as creating works cited pages and in-text citations. This text will take the students through retelling a narrative story, summarizing a reference, writing from pictures, summarizing multiple references, formal essay models, inventive writing, and formal critiques. In addition, throughout the year, students will read three of the Chronicles of Narnia chapter books including The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy. Students will also do a word study on forty-eight of C.S. Lewis's words that he used in these books. Students will also work out of the Fix It Grammar Level three Robin Hood textbook. Over the course of the year, students will review the basic parts of speech and punctuation rules. They will also learn how to identify clauses and phrases. This will allow them to internalize the tools necessary for editing their own compositions. Items you will need to acquire: The student/teacher combination of Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion's Song, The Student Resource Notebook, (either the free e-book that you download, 116 pages, or you can purchase it spiral bound.) Fix It Grammar: Level 3 Robin Hood Teacher/Student combination. These books can be found at IEW.com. Also needed are The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy. These are all written by C.S. Lewis and are in a series called the Chronicles of Narnia. If you wish your student to read more books than this, I can give you a recommended list.

Students will need an editor, and access to a computer to type final drafts and be able to get the information I send them on Slack and Google Classroom. Description:This is a year long class which will include reading, writing, comprehension and grammar. We will read two chapter books and work on lessons for each chapter. We will be reading the book, 'Little House in the Big Woods' by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Fall Semester and The BFG by Roald Dahl in the Spring Semester. Each week we will read a few chapters aloud, discuss them, write in our journals, and complete a lesson for each chapter.
Requirements:Must be able to read and write on a 2nd grade level.
