Description:
This is the Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons through IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Students will be writing papers, reading their papers to their peers, and reading literature and having discussions about those books. This class will also explore U.S. history, values, and include critical thinking. Students must purchase a copy of the Advanced U.S. History- Based Writing Lessons student edition. The teacher edition is optional. We will starting the class with The Last of the Mohicans. Please have the novel at the start of class. Other class novels will be introduced as we move along and must be purchased by the student.
We will be using IEW's World History-Based Writing Lessons curriculum. This class will meet twice a week. The first day of the week we will be covering writing techniques and the weekly assignment. We will also be discussing the current book that is being read and working on weekly vocabulary words. The second day of the week we will be learning grammar and the students will receive help in their writing assignments. Students will be assigned papers to write, books to read, grammar and vocabulary to memorize as well as daily journal entries. Parent participation is required. This is not a history class but an English class with an emphasis on writing. The themes are history based. Students must bring paper, text books, and pencil to class. There will be a book list provided in the syllabus, but we will start with Carry on Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. Text books required for class are World History-Based Writing Lessons by Institute for Excellence in Writing, student and teacher additions as well as the Student Resource Notebook and the Fix It! Grammar Robin Hood Student Book 2, with the teacher Manual optional.
Five hours of homework a week is required.

Using the textbook Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion's Song by IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) students will complete thirty-one writing assignments. During this year-long class, students will write on topics from Narnia stories, history, and science while using all nine of the IEW's structural models including elements of style. Students will practice taking notes and writing outlines for their papers as well as creating works cited pages and in-text citations. This text will take the students through retelling a narrative story, summarizing a reference, writing from pictures, summarizing multiple references, formal essay models, inventive writing, and formal critiques. In addition, throughout the year, students will read three of the Chronicles of Narnia chapter books including The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy. Students will also do a word study on forty-eight of C.S. Lewis's words that he used in these books. Students will also work out of the Fix It Grammar Level three Robin Hood textbook. Over the course of the year, students will review the basic parts of speech and punctuation rules. They will also learn how to identify clauses and phrases. This will allow them to internalize the tools necessary for editing their own compositions. Items you will need to acquire: The student/teacher combination of Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion's Song, The Student Resource Notebook, (either the free e-book that you download, 116 pages, or you can purchase it spiral bound.) Fix It Grammar: Level 3 Robin Hood Teacher/Student combination. These books can be found at IEW.com. Also needed are The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy. These are all written by C.S. Lewis and are in a series called the Chronicles of Narnia. If you wish your student to read more books than this, I can give you a recommended list.

This year-long class can be used for one high school English credit as well as one History credit. Students will use the textbook, Advanced U.S. History-based Writing Lessons by IEW, Institute for Excellence in Writing, to learn structure and style in writing. Students will complete thirty-one writing lessons while they work on note-taking and writing outlines, retelling a narrative story, summarizing multiple references, writing from pictures, inventive writing, formal essay models, formal critique, advanced essay models with a super essay, nine-paragraph essay, and a persuasive essay. Students will also work on using in-text citations and creating bibliographies. Students will also read eleven books. The literature includes; The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon Leyson, The old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the Gardener by Sarah Stewart, Co. Aytch-A Civil War Narrative by Sam R. Watkins, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, and Anne Frank-The Diary of a Young Girl. Books may be read, listened to, or watched if they are a movie. Parents, please be aware that some of these are war stories and may have graphic content and may not be appropriate for your student. Use discretion. These books will be discussed in class including discussions on the setting and context of the books, the characters, conflicts, resolutions, themes, and lessons learned from the books. There will also be writing assignments for some of these books.
For the history credit, the students will read the book A Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen. Students will read about thirty pages a week from this book, create a U.S. History timeline that will gain five to ten new events a week, and choose one event that was discussed in the book and either defend the author's position or disagree with it. This will be a written response and the students must back up their position with facts. Timelines and responses will be discussed respectfully in class.

Parents must help their students at home. This class is for experienced IEW students. Students will need an editor. Students are not allowed to take this course on Zoom. Students must attend class. Zoom attendance is for emergencies or sickness only. Students must have a Student Resource Notebook. A free download comes with the IEW book, or it can be purchased at IEW.com. Students will need the Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons Student Book and the Teacher Manual. The Patriot's History of the United States by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen can be purchased on Amazon, or possibly at Exodus Books. The Literature books mentioned above can also be purchased either on Audible, Amazon or at Exodus Books. Exodus Books is in Oregon City but I usually have them shipped to my house. Please pay for this class in full by the end of the first week of class or make arrangements with me for payments. You can slack message me about arrangements.

Description:
Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri, is a full language arts program. It is geared to help students learn the foundations of our language, by learning the 70 basic phonograms and 29 spelling rule cards. It is designed to: 1) reduce frustration for students learning to spell, read and write and 2) equip parents in developing tools to help their children build confidence and a solid foundation for the rest of their learning and education. Each student will build their own Learning Log, receive and learn the 98 cards that unlock the "mystery" of the English language and learn some fun ways to practice the skills they learn in class in their learning at home.
Required materials: Primary Learning Log, 98 phonogram and spelling rule cards, pencil, red pencil
